Professional boxer and senator Manny Pacquiao is running for president of the Philippines in the upcoming 2022 elections. His candidacy was supported by a faction of the ruling party, the Philippine Democratic Party – People’s Power (PDP-Laban), which includes the current president, Rodrigo Duterte.
“I am a fighter, and I will always be a fighter both in the ring and outside of it,” Pacquiao stated when he agreed to enter the presidential race.
At 42, Manny Pacquiao has dedicated 26 years to boxing and is the only boxer to have won world championships in eight different weight classes. In recent years, he has also served as a senator in parliament. Initially an ally of the current president, he has since begun to criticize the government’s actions under Duterte.
Pacquiao has expressed concerns over Duterte’s closeness to China and the government’s inadequate efforts to fight corruption. He highlighted that over 10 billion pesos (approximately $200 million) allocated for pandemic relief did not reach struggling families. He promises to expose further instances of misappropriated funds.
He emphasized that the era of corrupt officials is over. In response, Duterte has challenged his party mate to specify which ministries are involved in corruption and urged him not to engage in political gamesmanship.
